Crafting the immersive world of 16th century feudal Japan for Assassin’s Creed Shadows was an extraordinary and deeply fulfilling challenge - one that demanded both artistic ambition and an immense respect for historical authenticity. From the grandeur of its castle towns and bustling ports to the serenity of its shrines and sweeping pastoral landscapes, every detail was a labor of love.
At Ubisoft Sofia, we had the incredible privilege of helping shape the artistic vision of this world, particularly in bringing to life entire provinces - Kii (modern-day Wakayama Prefecture), Yamato (Nara Prefecture), and the breathtaking natural landscapes of Wakasa (partially Fukui Prefecture). I was truly fortunate to be entrusted with defining the Art Direction for these regions, as well as guiding the refinement and enhancing the final look of cinematic lighting in cutscenes.
Opportunities to fully "roll up my sleeves" and represent an artistic vision through hands-on Concept Art are rare, making this journey all the more rewarding. The artwork you see here was created precisely for that purpose - to explore and establish the look and feel of the natural paths winding through the very dynamic, dramatic yet spiritual, storm-swept coastline of the Kii region.
This experience has been nothing short of remarkable - filled with admiration, deep respect, relentless dedication, and countless hours of learning and growth. But above all, it was driven by a collective pursuit of beauty and excellence.
I am profoundly grateful to all my colleagues, who poured their hearts and souls into this project, and it has been both an honor and a privilege to stand alongside them on this adventure.
A heartfelt thank you to Ubisoft Sofia for your passion, perseverance, and unwavering professionalism! ❤️
And a special thanks to Ubisoft Quebec City for the trust, support, guidance and amazing collaboration!
